Instead of developing its own north bridge for Athlon64 (that represents merely an AGP and connection with south bridge), ALi decided to buy a license for AMD north bridge. This resulted in a powerful combination but it wasn’t enough to beat SiS and VIA.
VIA has apparently decided to retain its leading position by having integrated Serial ATA controller and gigabit network interface. In addition VIA will release an updated south bridge with four SATA ports instead of just two. Check for athlon64 drivers.
SiS utilizes a promising interface between the bridges getting beyond HyperTransport. The optimized interface is called HyperStreaming. In contrast to VIA, SiS 755 enables the acceleration by separately adjusting PCI and AGP clock. In addition SiS 755 is faster than M1687 and nForce3 150.
